Fleas
Flea control in the GTA and Peel
Most of the flea life cycle is in the home, not on the animal. Effective control pairs veterinary care for the pet with treatment and cleaning of the areas where fleas develop.

Why pet treatment may not solve the whole problem
Veterinary products target fleas on the animal, while eggs and developing stages can remain in carpet, bedding, furniture and floor gaps. The pet and the home may both need attention to stop the cycle.
So the pet gets protected, the house does not, and two weeks later you are being bitten around the ankles again. Nothing went wrong with the vet product. It was just never meant to treat a building.
Why follow-up matters
A flea pupa sits inside a sticky, well protected cocoon that most insecticides simply do not get through. It can stay in there for weeks waiting for a signal that a host has arrived, usually vibration, warmth or carbon dioxide. That is why a house that has been empty for a month can hit you with a wave of fleas the day you walk back in.
Pupal cocoons are difficult for treatments to penetrate. Vacuuming and normal activity encourage emergence so newly active fleas encounter treated surfaces. A scheduled follow-up helps address this part of the life cycle.
How we handle it
- Inspection. We confirm it is fleas, find the hot spots, which are almost always where the animal sleeps, and check whether anything wild got under the deck or into the attic and left a population behind.
- Preparation list. We explain how to vacuum, wash pet bedding and clear floors before treatment. Good preparation materially improves the result.
- Treatment with a growth regulator. A residual applied to carpet, rugs, upholstery, baseboards and the pet resting areas, combined with an insect growth regulator that stops eggs and larvae ever reaching adulthood.
- Yard and entry points if needed. Shaded, sheltered ground along fence lines and under decks holds fleas when a stray or a raccoon has been passing through.
- Scheduled follow-up. Often planned around two weeks later, based on the site and activity, to assess newly emerged fleas and continue control.
Fleas with no pet in the house
It happens more than people expect. A previous tenant left a population behind, or a squirrel, raccoon or family of mice nested in a wall void or attic and moved on. The fleas stay, go dormant, and then find you. If that is the situation, the nesting site has to be dealt with as well or the same thing happens again next season.
What you should keep doing
- Vacuum every day or two for the first fortnight, especially along baseboards and under furniture. Empty the canister or bag outside each time.
- Keep the pet on its vet-prescribed product for the full course. The house treatment and the animal treatment only work together.
- Wash pet bedding weekly on the hottest cycle the fabric allows.
- Expect to see the odd flea for a week or two after treatment. That is emergence, not failure, and it is what the follow-up visit is for.
