What is actually in your house

Most spiders found in and around local homes are not dangerous to people. Common visitors include cellar spiders, house spiders, wolf spiders, funnel weavers and the orb weavers that build across porches. Avoid handling any spider you cannot identify; send us a clear photo if you are unsure.

Even harmless spiders can be unwelcome, and frequent webs often point to abundant insect activity nearby.

Where they set up

Basement and garage corners. Window wells and frames. Soffits, eaves and porch ceilings. Around exterior lights, because porch lights pull in the flying insects they feed on. Crawlspaces and utility rooms. Stored boxes, sheds, and behind furniture nobody has moved in a year.

How we handle it

1. Inspection. We look at the species, hiding spots and insect activity supporting the population.
2. Web and egg-sac removal. Physical removal from accessible eaves, corners and window wells helps reduce current activity and future hatchlings.
3. Exterior perimeter treatment. Foundation, entry points, soffits, window and door frames.
4. Cut the food supply. Getting the flies, midges and moths under control is what makes spider work hold.
5. Exclusion and prevention. Screens, door sweeps, sealed gaps and less insect-attracting exterior lighting can make the building less inviting.

Why so many in the fall?

Cooler weather changes insect and spider activity around foundations, doors and windows. Removing webs helps, but recurring activity usually improves only when hiding spots, entry points and insect food sources are addressed too.
